De Jong happy his ‘idol’ Messi is now his team-mate

The midfielder has arrived in Barcelona

New signing Frenkie de Jong is looking forward to life at Barcelona after arriving at the club ahead of his official presentation on Friday.

The club announced in January they had agreed a deal to bring the midfielder to the Camp Nou on a five-year deal and De Jong has already offered his first thoughts on his new team.

“I’m happy to be able to play with Messi, who I have always followed. Now my idol will be my team-mate,” he said.

“Barça and Holland have always had a great, special connection, and I hope to follow in that tradition.

“I want to be one of the great Dutch players who have played at FC Barcelona.”
