The midfielder is not getting carried away with his progress

Riqui Puig is refusing to get carried away despite producing a lively showing for Barcelona against Chelsea in Tuesday’s friendly.

The 19-year-old was a bit of a surprise inclusion in Ernesto Valverde’s starting XI but caught the eye in the 45 minutes he was given in Japan.

Puig made his first-team debut last season and will be hoping for more opportunities in the months ahead but is keeping his feet on the ground.

“I’m a more mature player now,” he said. “I’m still a Barca B player and I’m here to grow.”

Valverde has a tough decision to make when it comes to Puig and whether to promote him or keep him with Barca B for now.

On Tuesday’s evidence he looks ready for the first-team but will he get enough game time if he is promoted given the competition for places in midfield?
