Barcelona are reportedly confident they will pay 170 million and PSG will not be legally able to refuse

Neymar did not get his move last summer. The Brazilian forward could not return to FC Barcelona despite reportedly putting large amounts of pressure on his current club, Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the story isn’t over yet, because rumors say that Barça will be able to buy the player for 170 million euro next summer. The player has no release clause, but Barcelona reportedly see a possible legal maneuver to break the contract in 2020, whether PSG wants it or not.

The legal theory goes like this, according to Mundo Deportivo: Next summer, Neymar will have completed what FIFA defines as the “protected period,” which is the first three seasons or first three years, whichever happens first. Once this time is up, if a player has the same contract as when they signed, without having renewed it, FIFA recognizes the right for the player to leave the club, by paying an indemnity.

The cost of that indemnity is calculated with a formula provided by FIFA that looks at what the footballer’s transfer cost, the amortization of the transfer, and other variables. The report says that Neymar’s agents have consulted with FIFA and have been told the cost will be around 170 million.

If Neymar were to ask FIFA to activate this option next year, Barcelona could then pay the fee.
