Getafe almost nabbed Messi and Guardiola
The president has been talking transfers...
If you ask anyone to name some of the best player and coach combos in football history, Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola will certainly come up in that conversation. But have you ever asked yourself, what if they were on Getafe? I certainly hadn’t.
In the latest of quarantine revisionist history lessons, Getafe president Angel Torres said that Getafe almost became the home for Messi and Guardiola.
“In Messi’s first or second year [in the first team], we came really close to bringing him to Getafe on loan. In the end, [Frank] Rijkaard didn’t agree to it and we were left with just our desire,” he said.
“One day, (Barcelona sporting director) Txiki [Begiristain] were at a European draw in Switzerland and the idea was that [Getafe boss Michael] Laudrup would go to Barcelona and we would get Guardiola as a replacement.”
