Braithwaite is a perfect fit for Setien’s Barcelona

The Dane must be kept

Gone are the days where a player is judged by how much he costs a club in transfer spend.

We only need look at the signings of Antoine Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele to ram home that particular point.

Ditto Martin Braithwaite.

The Dane was brought in thanks to the emergency transfer situation Barca found themselves in because of Dembele’s injury.

Cue the culer masses suggesting how far we’d fallen because we were shopping in the bargain basement so to speak. That it was a sign of how bad things were that we had to sign a player from a relegation-threatened rival.

All of that hot air came before Braithwaite had even stepped out onto the Camp Nou pitch for his presentation, minds already made up.

His hire was a polarising one, no doubt, but every player - big name or otherwise - deserves the chance to prove their worth, and here’s where Braithwaite has shut a few mouths.

Give me one good reason why we should get rid of the player this summer?

An intelligent deep-thinker, Braithwaite has espoused many times why he will be a success at Barca in interviews. Not once has it entered his head that he doesn’t belong at the club.

He’s studied the way Messi in particular moves, and his aim has been to make himself as useful as possible to the team. No airs and graces, just a solid work ethic.

And to this point, he’s been true to his word.

Since he first set foot on the pitch whilst wearing the Blaugrana he’s looked comfortable, and his goal on Saturday night was a reward for just how well he’s integrated into the side.

He could’ve had another if it weren’t for the outstretched boot from the keeper, but more than that, his movement throughout the match in Mallorca was top class.

Given the financial situation at present, buying a €100m+ player stinks quite frankly, and like Messrs. Griezmann, Dembele and Coutinho, there’s no guarantee that Lautaro Martinez will be a success at the club.

It’s another ‘statement’ signing to appease those who believe you have to spend millions of euros to remain at the top. A buying policy that’s nothing more than a ‘flex,’ and no different to Cristiano Ronaldo showing off his six-pack. ‘Look at me’ it screams, and that’s not Barca.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Braithwaite deserves his chance in the limelight, and it will be a travesty if he’s moved on this summer.
