What next for Semedo and Barcelona?

The right-back’s future is unclear

Barcelona and Nelson Semedo looked certain to part ways this summer with the Catalan giants reportedly willing to sell the right-back to the highest bidder.

At the start of the year (January in fact) Sport were reporting Barcelona were hoping to offload the Portugal international for €50 million.

Fast forward six months and the same newspaper had Semedo on their front page with a report about how they want €40m for the right-back.

Of course the Covid-19 pandemic has changed everything, not least player’s transfer values, but it seems likely that Barca may struggle to get even that for Semedo.

What is clear is that Barca need to offload some players this summer to balance the books, and Semedo is one of those considered expendable.

Yet rumors about a move to Manchester City have gone very quiet.

Indeed Marca reported on Friday that Pep Guardiola’s side aren’t interested because “he doesn’t fit the profile of a Guardiola right-back.”

Over at Sport there’s a report about how Bayern Munich have been put off too. The Bundesliga champions have deemed him too expensive and want Sergino Dest instead.

There are still a few whispers that he could be included in a swap deal this summer, although Juventus really would like Arthur instead and Inter Milan seem pretty keen on Junior Firpo.

Meanwhile, Semedo is preparing for a return to La Liga action with Barcelona and should feature heavily in the team’s final 11 games.

He seems to enjoy life under Quique Setien and some impressive performances between now and the end of the season could play a big role in where he ends up playing his football next season
