Busi needs to get busy or get out of Barcelona

A terrible performance against Espanyo

Where on earth do you start after that?!

That’s as poor as Barca have played in a long, long time and whether it was Espanyol’s intention to sit 10 men behind the ball all night or not, we have to be better than that.

It was horrible to watch at times, and with a little extra luck, the Periquitos could’ve left Camp Nou with at least a point.

Sergio Busquets’ recent decline has been noticeable and the way in which performed - or more accurately didn’t perform - should see him spending a significant period on the sidelines in the near future.

Barca can’t afford passengers any longer.

If the club want to bring back the real glory days, then it’s about time the big names were called out when the standard of their play deserves it.

Busi was simply awful and barely played a decent pass all night. Moreover, there were at least four occasions in the game where he took five or more touches before playing the ball.

Since when has Sergio Busquets needed five touches of the ball to get in under control, before passing it straight to the opposition?

Is it that everyone is in holiday mode again in the dressing room? Is there no accountability here?

That question has to be asked because there was a player in Riqui Puig who sat on the bench throughout when, frankly, his energy and verve would’ve given Barca a shot in the arm rather than the laboured fare we saw for the most part on Wednesday night.

He does a completely different job to Busquets of course, but at least his ingenuity would’ve opened up the channels in a congested midfield and perhaps have taken the game in a different direction.

Wednesday was the clearest example we’ve had as proof that Busi’s star is on the wane. He’s been poor for a large part of this season but against Espanyol he was breathtakingly poor.

Sir Alex Ferguson kept his Manchester United team at the top of the Premier League tree for two decades because no matter the name, the team always came first. If you didn’t cut it any longer you were dispensed with.

That’s precisely the type of attitude that’s been missing at Barcelona for a while now, and perpetuates a situation whereby senior members of the side, whether they’re playing well or not, expect to walk into the starting XI every week.

It’s time for that to stop and for Setien to put a marker down in the final few games of the campaign.
