The goalkeeper has been playing hurt

Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo knee surgery to fix a nagging problem he’s been carrying for a while. While in the long term this is expected to help him, it will put him out of action until around October, at least.

The German himself confirmed it on social media, saying “it’s a proactive intervention in order to prevent and prepare for the future.”

The preventative surgery is supposed to “clean up” damage done to his knee tendon, in order to allow it to fully heal and avoid it getting worse.

Ter Stegen’s absence in the beginning of next season will test the limits of a Barcelona squad which has come under question after a humiliating defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.

The need for a surgery for the goalkeeper has been discussed in the past, and it was decided to delay it until the season was over to minimize the amount of games he’d miss.
