Some of the team’s senior, home-grown players may have to sacrifice

FC Barcelona will reduce the roles and perhaps the salaries of some home-grown pillars of the team, according to a new report. Barcelona will try to review the salaries of Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Sergi Roberto, hoping to make their contracts more performance-based and less based on fixed amounts.

Roberto’s deal expires first, so he could divide the money in the remaining 2 years left on his contract over a longer period of time. He. alongside Busquets and Alba, are expected to play a smaller role in the squad as well. Piqué, on the other hand, is still seen as a mandatory starter for Ronald Koeman, at least for now.

It will be complicated to ask these players to accept a pay cut. but the club will try to appeal to their love for the club and the fact that football is in an economic crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Koeman has already shown the door to Ivan Rakitić, who left for Sevilla, while the exits of Arturo Vidal and Luis Suárez are expected to follow. The Dutch manager wants to reinvigorate the team with new blood.
