The required signatures have been reached

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu looks set to face a vote of no confidence after the motion against the board reached the necessary 16,521 validated signatures.

The group Mes que una Mocio, which has been collecting signatures, confirmed the news on Twitter on Wednesday.

Barcelona now have 20 days to call a referendum to decide Bartomeu’s fate. The president will be forced out if two-thirds of voters go against the 57-year-old.

If Bartomeu does go then an election will be held to determine Barcelona’s next president with Joan Laporta and Victor Font among the candidates.

Another candidate, Jordi Farré, who also filed the petition against Bartomeu, has offered his thoughts on what will happen next and thinks Bartomeu could step down.

“I believe that there will be no referendum. I think that Bartomeu and his board will resign. I advise them to leave and call elections as soon as possible.”

Despite everything that’s happened there is no guarantee that Bartomeu will leave now, but he will definitely depart in March when elections are due to take place.
