Barca shouldn’t be unhappy with their transfer business

Much needed rejuvenation

There are lots of things wrong with our great club at the moment, of that there is no doubt.

However, one of the brighter spots of recent times has to be how well the club did in terms of their transfer business this summer.

Taking outgoing transfers as a start point, there won't be too many culers that would disagree with Barca moving on Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Luis Suarez.

Although all three, in my opinion, can still do a worthwhile job in their respective positions, by keeping them in situ it was stopping others from getting a fair crack.

Perhaps there could’ve been more of a financial benefit to Barca with the deals, but wages have been saved if nothing else, and given the size of the club’s debt now, it seems like every penny will need to be pinched from somewhere.

I’m still not sure I understand why Jean-Clair Todibo has been let go, although I accept that Ronald Araujo is coming into his own at present so maybe we should give the board the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Arthur Melo’s sale was a hugely divisive one, particularly because it was a ‘book balancer,’ but I’d contend that Miralem Pjanic is much more professional and, in the interim at least, will be the more useful player.

Longer term the Brazilian of course has many more years ahead of him, but if he carries on heading down the same path he was before he left, then he’ll certainly not become the player that many thought he would be whilst he was still at Gremio. Like so many, the bright lights and fast cars are already taking their toll.

Selling Nelson Semedo and getting Sergino Dest in his place is a masterful piece of business.

Despite his young age, Dest is already accomplished in his role, will understand the Barca way because of his tutelage at Ajax and we might finally have found a suitable replacement for Dani Alves. Watch this space.

Trincao and Pedri, once they’ve fully settled down, are sure to become the next generation of Barcelona superstars.

Both have fantastic technical ability, are fearless when it comes to taking players on and play both short and long passes with aplomb. Their ability to find space when there appears to be none will also become a feature of Barca’s play in due course.

Perhaps the biggest ‘signing’ of the season, however, is keeping Leo Messi at the club.

In the space of a month since it appeared a foregone conclusion that he would end up at Man City, our captain is leading by example once again, driving the team on and enjoying himself.

There really is a lot to be excited about right now...
