Luis Enrique warns Busquets over Spain place
The midfielder has been offered no guarantees
Spain manager Luis Enrique has warned Sergio Busquets he is not guaranteed a place in his team for next summer’s European Championship.
The 32-year-old captained the team in their friendly draw with Portugal ahead of Nations League fixtures against Switzerland and Ukraine.
Yet Lucho says he will select his team on merit and Busquets will only play if he’s proved he deserves his place in the starting XI.
“If he maintains the level of the last 11 years, he’ll be at the Euros. If he lowers it, we’ll see,” he said.
“He’s a veteran and he’s the first to know how this goes. In the end, there comes a time when age counts for everything.
“It’s the rule of life. Nobody spends 28 years in the national team.”

Busquets is coming under increasing pressure for his place for both club and country. He has started the season alongside Frenkie de Jong in Ronald Koeman’s 4-2-3-1 formation but faces competition from new signing Miralem Pjanic.
