The youngster’s on the shortlist

Barcelona forward Ansu Fati has been nominated for the ‘World Breakthrough of the Year’ at the prestigious Laureus Sports Awards.

The 18-year-old has been nominated along with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, MotoGP champ Joan Mir, tennis stars Dominic Thiem and Iga Swiatek as well as cyclist Tadej Pogacar.

The Laureus Awards seek to recognize the standout athletes of the year, and the awards ceremony will be held virtually this time around due to Covid-19.

Ansu gets the nod after enjoying a brilliant 2020 for club and country. The youngster broke into the first team at Barcelona, breaking a host of records with his goalscoring exploits.

The teenager also became Spain’s youngest goalscorer when he netted against Ukraine back in September at the age of 17 years and 311 days. He also finished as runner-up to Erling Haaland in the voting for the 2020 Golden Boy Award.

Of course, Ansu has been out of action since suffering a knee injury in November that required surgery.

It’s still not clear when the youngster will be ready to return for Barcelona, but there’s no doubt it will be great to have him back out on the pitch.
