Barça were denied a clear penalty in Sevilla loss
Referee Mateu Lahoz gave Barça a free-kick, but a different camera angle tells a very different story
Barcelona have very little reason to expect a different result in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey loss to Sevilla. The Blaugrana were flat out bad for 90 minutes and deserved to lose, but something else can also be true: they should have had a penalty.
There was an incident late in the game where Suso pulled Jordi Alba and the two fell inside the box, and referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz gave Barça a free-kick, arguing that Suso’s contact happened outside the box and the momentum of the play brought the two players down inside the penalty area.
But the Barcelona Instagram account posted an excellent sideline video that shows that Lahoz was simply wrong.
Suso certainly TRIES to foul Alba outside the box, but he only gets to pull the Barça full-back when the two are already inside the area. That’s clear as day, and VAR was in action for this game. Whether the video assistant saw nothing wrong to overturn the call or Lahoz simply ignored the advice from the truck, we’ll never know.
But in a social media world where everything is black and white, ALL of these things can be true at the same time: Barcelona played badly and deserved to lose; Ronald Koeman was once again outcoached in a big game; Samuel Umtiti is making too many mistakes to warrant a place in the team right now; and Barcelona were denied a clear penalty by a referee they’ve had issues with forever and should have had a chance to score and increase their odds in the second leg.
