La Liga looking at fans returning in April or May - report
It depends on vaccination rates in Spain
La Liga is considering having fans attend matches in April or May, if vaccination rates are good in February in Spain. That’s according to Javier Tebas, the league chief, who says the next few weeks will be key in making a decision.
“It will depend on the next two or three weeks. If vaccination rates increase in February and the level of infections decreases, it is possible that in April and May we can be in the stadiums,” Tebas said.
Vaccination rates are ramping up worldwide even as coronavirus cases have spiked in Spain over the last month.
“We have forced protocol changes and extreme measures. Our protocol is more complicated to avoid suspending games, which as of today there are none which have been suspended. That requires more work, more communication,” Tebas said in a virtual conference.
Fans have been missing from football games in Spain since the first major outbreaks of COVID-19 in the country.
TV broadcasts have resorted to using recorded fan noise and digital graphics to cover up empty stands.
