The captain’s thinking about a contract renewal

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has reportedly handed president Joan Laporta a “list of demands” that he wants the club to meet if he is to stay and sign a contract renewal at the Camp Nou.

The Argentine is said to be “open” to the idea of staying but has three key demands he wants the club to fulfil before he puts pen to paper on an extension, according to Eurosport.

The first concerns signings with Messi keen for Barca to bring in “astute transfers” in order to build a competitive squad. Eric Garcia on a free transfer would meet this criteria, according to the report, as would the arrival of Erling Haaland. Messi believes a “marquee” signing is crucial if the club are to dominate Europe again.

The captain also wants to see a “renewed trust in youth” and wants the club to keep building around their young players. Messi’s “built a chemistry” with Pedri, Ansu Fati, and Ilaix Moriba and wants the club to continue down that road.

And finally, Messi also wants a “direct line of communication” with Laporta and technical secretary Ramon Planes. Messi already enjoys an open relationship with Ronald Koeman and wants to see that extended to the club’s chiefs.
