He could miss about three weeks

Atlético Madrid have confirmed an injury to Luis Suárez in training that could see the Uruguayan miss out about three weeks, though some journalists are saying he could be back sooner.

The striker has been instrumental in Atlético’s first place atop La Liga, and has not missed any time due to injury up to this point. But he was seen limping off the training ground, which could be a problem for los colchoneros.

Suárez was already set to miss the match against Real Betis through suspension.

With Real Madrid winning their last game, Atlético losing to Sevilla, and FC Barcelona getting a last-gasp win against Real Valladolid, the upcoming Clásico could be massively consequential. Either side winning would put them provisionally atop the league. Atlético have been top of the league since last December, but Barcelona have closed the gap to just one point.

The Uruguayan made a move to the capital after years patterning Lionel Messi for Barcelona. Suarez is tied for second in the scoring charts alongside Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno, both with 19 goals. Messi is first, with 23.
