Heartbreak for Garcia Pimienta’s team

Barcelona B’s promotion hopes are over after being beaten on penalties in an epic shootout against UCAM Murcia on Sunday. The game ended 2-2 after extra-time which meant penalties with Murcia going on to win 5-4 to progress to the final.

Coach Garcia Pimienta was able to name Oscar Mingueza in his starting XI for the match after the defender agreed to drop down from the first team to play in the crucial game. However, Barca B were without Jandro Orellana who dropped down to the bench because of a muscular problem.

Barcelona got off to a fine start and thought they had opened the scoring after three minutes when Konrad de la Fuente had the ball in the net but it was harshly ruled out.

Indeed it was Murcia who took the lead midway through the first half when Alberto Fernandez scored the opener with a lot shot from just outside the box.

Yet Barca B hit back through two goals from Rey Manaj. The first came from the penalty spot straight after half-time after Matheus Pereira had been fouled.

Manaj’s second was a little bit special as the forward ran from inside his own half before firing a low shot home to make it 2-1.

Barca looked to be heading through but were pegged back on 81 minutes when former B teamer Xemi Fernández levelled from a corner to send the game into extra-time.

There was more drama to come in extra-time with Manaj coming within a whisker of bagging a hat-trick and a place in the final. His header from a corner was cleared off the line with just minutes remaining.

And so on to penalties and a wild shootout that saw Pena save four penalties but still end up on the losing side. It was a brilliant effort from the goalkeeper and the team but not quite enough to make it to the final.
