Lautaro admits he was ‘very close’ to joining Barca
The striker also spoke to Lionel Messi about a move
Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has admitted he came very close to a move to Barcelona but the transfer broke down for financial reasons.
The Argentine was heavily linked with a Camp Nou switch last summer but ended up staying at Inter and helped the Nerazzurri win the Serie A title this season.
Martinez has now opened up on what really happened last summer and said he even spoke to captain Lionel Messi about the possibility of moving to Barca.
“I was truly very close to joining Barcelona and I even talked it over with Messi,” he said.
“However, the Blaugrana had economic problems at that moment, so I decided to stay at Inter. It proved to be the right decision, especially as we then won the Scudetto.
“It’s just incredible to win the title at such an important club.”

The forward has been linked with Barcelona again this summer, along with Erling Haaland and Neymar, but once again a deal looks unlikely. President Joan Laporta reportedly wants to make a big-name signing but the club’s debts means that will be tricky to pull off.
