The president made the club’s position very clear

The Ilaix Moriba situation continues to frustrate everyone at Barcelona. The young midfielder is negotiating a new contract and his representatives are making outrageous salary demands while Barça try to solve their financial issues, and it looks as though president Joan Laporta has had enough of the drama.

Speaking at Emerson Royal’s presentation on Monday, Laporta was asked about Moriba’s contract situation. The latest reports say Barça made a final offer and are waiting a response from Ilaix’s agents, and Laporta took a very firm stance on the situation.

“We will try to make sure that his case is not repeated anymore. He has one year left on his contract and does not want to accept the club’s conditions. We do not accept that and we want to send a message to the team.

“If you do not want to renew, we have other solutions. What we don’t want are players made at La Masia who don’t want to renew. He’s a player we’ve given opportunities, but the club is above all. I would like you [Moriba] to think again.

“We cannot allow him to be promoted and then leave. We won’t accept that with any player.”

That’s as clear as it gets, and Laporta is absolutely right. Barça are in financial hell and can’t even register Lionel Messi’s new contract right now, and Ilaix’s people have made it an impossible situation.

Moriba is a talented prospect but the Barça academy will never stop producing great talent, and it’s so refreshing to hear someone in charge say that no one is bigger than the club. Let’s hope the agents take the message and this ugly situation gets resolved soon.
