These follow Piqué’s choice to reduce his salary

Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Sergi Roberto will accept salary reductions in the next few days to help their club, FC Barcelona, navigate difficult financial times.

That’s according to reports from Catalan radio, which also says that Gerard Piqué was instrumental in getting them to agree to the wage cuts.

Piqué was the first player to accept reduced wages to help the team through a difficult period after years of mismanagement and the fallout of the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He, alongside Alba, Busquets, and Roberto, are the team’s captains after Lionel Messi’s departure.

Messi had agreed a salary reduction as well, but ultimately Barcelona could not keep him even at 50% wages and he left for Paris Saint-Germain.

The trio will accept less pay as well as deferred payments in order to help the club, although they reportedly were “surprised” that similar demands were not made of other big earners.

All four players are longtime servants of the club and came up through the youth ranks, though Alba and Piqué spent time at other clubs as they developed.
