He was transferred back to Atlético before that happened

Antoine Griezmann was not necessarily looking to leave FC Barcelona and wanted to become the team’s leader after the departure of Lionel Messi, according to a new report.

However, his high salary, alongside Barcelona’s need to resolve a financial crisis, eventually forced the issue, and he was loaned to Atlético Madrid.

Griezmann shone at points last season, but did not consistently perform as the superstar Barcelona expected after buying him from Atléti.

He was also not playing well in the opening games this season.

Many people thought that after Messi had left for Paris Saint-Germain, Griezmann would occupy a more natural position behind the striker now that Messi had vacated it. But his early performances left a lot to be desired. Instead, Memphis Depay shone.

In a very friendly article, Diario SPORT says that “the talent that decides matches is scarce and Luuk de Jong will not have a sudden metamorphosis.”

De Jong was brought from Sevilla to help add scoring depth upfront. He is more of a traditional #9, or striker, whereas Griezmann is a second striker and was often deployed as a winger at the Camp Nou.

Griezmann scored twice in France’s win over Finland recently. He is due to play his first match in his second spell with the colchoneros soon.
