Luuk de Jong talks up connection with Memphis Depay
The new signing has been presented at the Camp Nou
Luuk de Jong has officially been presented as a Barcelona player at the Camp Nou following his move from Sevilla on loan for the rest of the season.
The striker spoke at a press conference and talked up his good relationship with compatriots Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, and coach Ronald Koeman.
“They gave me a great welcome. They are like a big family. I have a great relationship with Koeman from the Dutch national team so it is fantastic to be in the team,” he said.
“I have a very good relationship with Memphis. I know him because we have played together in the national team. We understand each other without words using the language of football. I know Frenkie well too.”
De Jong also made it clear he is raring to go and hoping to get minutes in Barcelona’s next game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
“I had a complicated knee injury, but I have been training for three or four weeks. I feel fit and prepared so I don’t know Koeman’s plans for the next game, but I’m ready,” he added.
“I hope to be stronger for the game against Bayern. Koeman wanted a different forward than the ones he already had in the team. I think I can give it to him. Hopefully everything goes well.”
The striker also talked up his scoring record and made it clear just how thrilled he is to be a Barcelona player.
“I enjoy the game. When I was younger I scored a lot of goals, and scoring in all the good stadiums is a huge pleasure,” he said. “I have scored in important matches and it is a question of motivation. I enjoy doing it. No matter the opponent.
“Being here is incredible. I have worked very hard since I was little and being at Barça is one of the things you dream of as a child. I look back and am happy with what I have achieved and I hope to achieve more things now that I’m at Barça.”
Koeman will have to make changes to his attack for the visit of Bayern now Antoine Griezmann has left. Memphis Depay is surely a guaranteed starter but it’s not clear who will join the in-form Dutchman up front.
