Who should captain Barcelona if Sergi Roberto leaves?

A few candidates available

Although nothing has been finalised as yet, there does appear to be a possibility that Sergi Roberto will leave the club this summer.

A potential move to Inter Miami to join up with the ex-Barca contingent isn’t without foundation, though if it becomes obvious the midfielder is moving on to pastures new, there are bound to be a number of clubs interested in his services.

That would leave a question mark as to who would replace him as club captain...

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

The current incumbent when Sergi Roberto has been injured or not selected, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is more than likely to be promoted to first choice.

A keeper that can see it all from his position on the pitch, he has grown into the role when needed and isn’t afraid to let his defenders have it when they’ve let the team down.

Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan is the current German national team captain and would be my pick to replace Sergi Roberto.

A commanding presence on and off the pitch, ‘Gundo’ isn’t frightened of digging his team-mates out and telling it how it is. Just ask Ronald Araujo.

Expects total commitment from everyone whilst always giving 100 percent himself.

Has the experience and seniority to command respect.

Frenkie de Jong

After Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the Dutchman is the most likely to receive the honour of captaining the first-team.

A player that has often been touted for a move away himself, De Jong has been steadfast in his desire to remain with Barcelona and he always puts himself on the line for the team.

Arguably one of the most important players in the squad, the example he sets for everyone is as good a reason as any for him to succeed Sergi Roberto.

Robert Lewandowski

As another senior member of the first-team, his influence in the dressing room is obvious.

A player that also leads by example on the pitch and who will have an ally in new first-team coach, Hansi Flick.

Given that he’s a striker - and it isn’t often those up front are handed the armband - there’s only a small likelihood that Lewandowski captains the XI next season.

Ronald Araujo

He’s already on the list as one of the club captains, but there are persistent rumours that Ronald Araujo might also be sent on his way, for no other reason than a significant amount of money will be placed in club coffers.

Regardless of whether that were the case or not, in some of the biggest games last season, the Uruguayan was an abject failure.

When he was required to stand tall and boss games, he lost his head. That chink in his armour is arguably something that would see him drop down the list.

Gavi

Forget Gavi’s age for just a minute and consider what he brings to the team.

He’d be a wild card selection for sure, but there is no one more committed and who has more desire in the team than the dogged and determined soon-to-be 20-year-old.

There might be an argument that he too has his rash moments, and he would certainly be the outsider in this pack, but you can’t help but think that he would wear the armband with the pride and seriousness that such an honour deserves.
