Athletic hit out at ‘bombardment’ of Nico Williams
The club aren’t happy
Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte has hit out at the constant questions put to Nico Williams about his future amid speculation he’s wanted at Barcelona this summer.
Williams is currently away with Spain at Euro 2024 and has regularly been asked about next season and the possibility of a move to the Catalan giants.
Uriarte is not at all happy with the situation and has even accused the RFEF of failing to “protect” Williams properly on international duty.
“Nico is a footballer very committed to Athletic Club, who has been subjected to an excessive and uncontrolled bombardment of questions while at the Euro Cup. The Spanish Federation has not known how to protect him.”
Uriarte also insisted that his club are keen to keep their best players despite interest from elsewhere.
“Athletic aims for the maximum, without limits,” he added. “We are showing that we have a winning project for footballers and coaches.
“We have renewed the contracts of players who are playing in the Euro Cup, such as Unai Simón or Vivian, and coveted players such as Prados, Oihan, Julen or Paredes have also signed for several seasons, to give some examples.
“Athletic Club is economically, socially and sportingly capable of keeping footballers of the caliber of those named in its structure, including Nico Williams”
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has claimed his club can afford to sign Nico Williams this summer, with the forward expected to decide his future after Euro 2024.
