Rafa Marquez leaves Barcelona Atletic for Mexico role

Barcelona have confirmed that Rafa Marquez has left his job at the club ahead of taking up a position with the Mexico national team.
Marquez had been expected to stay on as Barcelona Atletic coach for another season after agreeing an extension, but he will now depart after two years in the role.

Here’s the club’s official statement:
“Rafa Márquez will not continue as coach of Barça Atlètic. The Mexican coach has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to release his contract, to take on a new professional challenge.
“The Club thanks Rafa Márquez for his dedication and professionalism during all this time in which he has been a fundamental piece in the training of players, and wishes him the best of luck in the future both in the sporting and personal fields.”
Marquez is now expected to work alongside Javier Aguirre with the Mexico national team. It’s thought he could subsequently take over as manager after the 2026 World Cup.
