The goalkeeper is familiar with the new boss’ methods

Marc-André ter Stegen is ready to begin another season as Barcelona’s goalkeeper and will be coached by a familiar face in Hansi Flick, who was Ter Stegen’s German national manager for nearly two years after Flick left Bayern Munich.

And Barça’s starting shot-stopper knows exactly how his coach wants his teammates to play. Speaking to the media this week Ter Stegen was asked about Flick’s style and philosophy, and he gave a detailed answer about Hansi’s focus on physicality, preparation and quick, incisive attacks.

“There’s a lot of intensity; the physical part is very important and we’re working hard to be prepared for the entire season. Hansi has always given a lot of importance to the physical aspect. Every coach is different and has his own philosophy, and Hansi really cares about this aspect. I hope it benefits us and gives us the strength to compete in every moment of the season.

“That’s Hansi. He wants to play very fast and forward, to find the space to shoot on goal, to play quickly and work to be perfect defensively. He wants us to have a clear idea of what we need to do. And I’m convinced it will work. But I don’t think we’ll lose much of what we had in the past: we still want to have possession, dominate the game and then find the right moment to attack quickly.”

We saw all of those factors in display in Barça’s preseason debut against Manchester City on Tuesday, when a very young Blaugrana side looked more than ready to deal with Pep Guardiola’s dominant possession style from a tactical standpoint and created danger time after time with high pressing and well-crafted counter-attacks.

There were also moments of sustained possession that led to good chances after long passing sequences, and despite conceding two goals the Catalans had a strong defensive structure from start to finish. It was a very encouraging start, and the expectation is for things to get even better once the more experienced and more talented senior players join the side for competitive matches.

Ter Stegen will be one of them, and he seems to think Flick Ball will work at Camp Nou.
