The draw has been made

Barcelona’s eight opponents in the new UEFA Champions League format have been revealed after the draw for the competition’s new League Phase was made on Thursday evening in Monaco.

The Catalans will face Bayern Munich, Atalanta, Young Boys and Brest at home and Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, Red Star Belgrade and AS Monaco away between September and January as the Blaugrana look to finish in the Top 8 to guarantee a spot in the Round of 16 and avoid the Playoffs.

The headline matchup is obviously the reunion of Barça coach Hansi Flick with his old side Bayern, who have dominated their Champions League encounters with Barça including their infamous 8-2 victory in 2020 with Flick as the coach. Barça don’t have to travel to the Allianz Arena this season, however, so maybe their chances of beating Bayern in Europe are finally better than zero.

But the rest of the draw isn’t easy either: Barça have been given a brutal set of away matches, including a trip to Dortmund to face the intimidating Yellow Wall, as well as games away to Benfica and Red Star Belgrade who also have incredibly passionate crowds. The final League Phase away match is against Monaco, who showed Barça in the Joan Gamper Trophy just how dangerous they can be.

As for the home matches other than Bayern there are two winnable games against Young Boys and Brest, but Atalanta are the reigning Europa League champions and a nightmare to play against thanks to the brilliant coaching of Gian Piero Gasperini.

The full fixture list will be released on Saturday with the exact dates of Barça’s matches, but we do know their European journey will begin the week of September 17-19.
