The 17-year-old sees the eternal captain as his reference

Pau Cubarsí is back with the senior Spanish squad after representing the under-23s and winning Olympic Gold this summer, but the 17-year-old has proven without a shadow of a doubt throughout 2024 that he is already a world-class center-back who is a mainstain of Barcelona’s starting XI and will soon be a crucial piece of La Roja as well.

Cubarsí is yet to make his full debut for Spain in a competitive match and hopes that chance comes in either of the two Nations League games against Denmark in Serbia over the next few days, and the young defender spoke to Diario SPORT about his time with the national team and his excitement about his potential debut.

Cubarsí also spoke about his idol, Barcelona’s legendary center-back and eternal captain Carles Puyol, and how he wants to emulate Puyol’s greatness as Cubarsí looks to have a great career of his own at the heart of Barça’s — and Spain’s — defense.

“My goal is to have the leadership and the character of Puyol, both inside and outside the pitch. He was a leader, always ready to help his teammate. He encouraged his teammate if things weren’t going well and lifted the whole team when things were going well. For me he is a reference.”

There is nothing not to like about Pau Cubarsí. He is already a great defender, with the necessary pace and physicality to thrive in today’s game, an absurd passing vision and quality that sets him apart at the position, and the desire to keep improving not only as a player but as a leader, looking at the one and only Carles Puyol as his example.

What a young man.
