Koeman thinks Frenkie needs many more minutes to get into a rhythm

One of the best news in the last couple of weeks for Barcelona has been the return of Frenkie de Jong, who is finally back after missing five months with an ankle injury that cost him the end of last season, all of Euro 2024 and nearly two months to begin this campaign.

De Jong is now back in the fold and slowly getting into a rhythm under Hansi Flick at Barça, but it might be a while until we see him back in action for his national team. That’s according to Netherlands manager and Barça legend Ronald Koeman, who was asked about De Jong’s status this week and revealed a phone call with the player in which Koeman found out Frenkie is still not even close to being ready for an international call-up.

“I spoke to Frenkie de Jong on the phone. With all due respect, he is still far away. It is too early. He found playing for fifteen minutes exciting and tough. He still needs to play for a while and get into a rhythm.”

Frenkie is one of the few Barça players who would currently benefit from being involved in international action as he gets back into full fitness, so if he can stay healthy and play more minutes for his club in the next few weeks he might get a call-up back to his national side for the November window, which would actually be helpful to get him fully fit as quickly as possible.
