Spain boss talks leaving out Cubarsi & Gavi and calling up Casado
Interesting stuff
Luis de la Fuente has been talking about his latest Spain squad after calling up Marc Casado but opting to leave Pau Cubarsi at home.
Casado is one of four Barca players in the squad, while Cubarsi has missed out after sustaining a facial injury in midweek in the Champions League. De la Fuente says he didn’t want to take any risks with the teenager.
“He had a significant wound, with nine stitches and very deep,” he told reporters.
“We always take care of our players. Pau has to have a few days until the wound heals. We must not take any risks.”
There was also praise for Casado as De La Fuente explained why he’d opted to give the midfielder a chance with the senior side.
“It’s all thanks to his confidence, determination and ability. There are very good footballers who need that level of demand to shine,” he added.
“If he hadn’t been put in his club we wouldn’t have valued his ability so much. Great professionals and great people are the ones who show the most when faced with the greatest challenges. From now on he will be challenged and he is ready. He still has room for improvement.”
And there was also a few words about Gavi. The midfielder has not been included this time around but is still very much in De la Fuente’s thoughts.
“Gavi is in the natural process, but we have to be very careful. He was injured a year ago and his progress is exceptional,” he said.
“He is full of energy, character, desire, his club is doing a fantastic job. We are looking forward to seeing him well, even more confident. He is very important for the national team.”
Spain take on Denmark and Switzerland over the international break but have already claimed their place in the Nations League quarter-finals.
