Flick talks Araujo and Ansu Fati futures
The two stars are heavily linked with an exit
As we enter the final two weeks of the January transfer window, two Barcelona players are being heavily linked with an exit: Ronald Araujo is seriously thinking about leaving the club and has an offer from Juventus on the table, while Ansu Fati is clearly not part of Hansi Flick’s plans and is attracting interest from a few clubs in Spain and around Europe.
Flick was asked about the two stars in a press conference on Tuesday, and the coach addressed their individual situations.
“Let’s see, since I speak specifically with the players, it’s up to me and the players, so I don’t have to comment. Iñigo was said to be a brilliant player, a leader. We hope he returns in a month. Araujo is a very good defender and a leader and he showed it on Sunday.
“I’m very happy with all my players. There are injuries, Ter Stegen, Bernal... now Christensen is back, maybe on Saturday in Getafe. This is the most important thing. I’m honest with all the players and we’ve spoken with Ansu about his situation. I said in the summer that it was up to him to give his best and that’s what happened, although he hasn’t been able to show us 100% of how good he is, and it’s a shame. But he must work to give his best.”
It seems clear that Flick wants Araujo to stay based on his public comments from last week, and we can safely speculate that the coach reiterated that position in his private chat with Ronald.
As for Ansu, it really is a shame that he hasn’t been able to perform well on a consistent basis and continues to be an injury-prone player, and it’s time all Barça fans accept the fact that the Ansu Fati story probably won’t have a happy ending.
