‘It disappoints me’ - De Jong expected more trophies at Barca
The Dutchman isn’t impressed
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has given a new interview and admits he’s disappointed by his career so far in Catalunya.
The Dutchman told Voetbal International that he expected to win more trophies than the three he has managed so far with Barca.
“I have to admit that when I signed for Barcelona, I didn’t imagine that I would only win a La Liga, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup after 4 years,” he said.
“I expected at least the double, so it disappoints me. Things happen outside that you can’t predict.”
The conversation inevitably also turned to talk about his future. De Jong’s contract status is once again generating plenty of headlines but he says it’s not guaranteed he will stay.
“I still have a year and a half at Barcelona and you read in the newspapers that this is an item,” he added.
“For me, it is just not an item now. Let me start playing football again first, then we will see what the club has planned and at that time I will sit down with my family and Ali to decide what I want myself.
“People think I want to stay at Barcelona forever because life outside of football is so good here, and that’s good, but what happens on the pitch is always less important. If I felt like I couldn’t contribute enough, or if the team wasn’t competitive, I would leave.”
De Jong’s contract currently runs until 2026 and recent reports have suggested Barcelona will offer him a contract extension with a big pay-cut.
