Hansi Flick gives verdict on La Liga title race ahead of Barça vs Rayo
Barça can reclaim top spot on Monday
Barcelona have a golden opportunity on Monday as the Catalans can reclaim top spot in the La Liga table for the first time in two months when they take on Rayo Vallecano at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium.
Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid did Barça a massive favor by dropping points on Saturday, opening the door for the Blaugrana to control their own destiny and return to first place with 14 games to go in the title race.
Hansi Flick was asked in a press conference on Sunday if he was aware of the slip-ups by the Madrid teams and what statement his side needs to make against a dangerous Rayo side, and the German coach made it clear Barça need to show a title-winning mentality on Monday.
“Of course, I know everything that happens, it was early and I was well informed. We’re just focused on ourselves, I think it’s the best thing we can do. It’s important to lead the standings, not [just] now, but it helps a lot and gives us confidence. We believe in what we have, but first we have to win.
“This shows that the league is very close, that there are many teams that can win. It’s good for us, for you... It’s football. Everything starts again.
“I want to be judged by how we play and by the titles we win. It’s all about mentality and the quality we’ve shown in recent games. It’s what I like, they’re playing very well, they believe in each other. We are here to win titles, that is our goal.”
Barça found themselves 10 points off the top at one point but now have a chance to really stamp their authority in the championship hunt, but it won’t be easy. Rayo are legitimate European contenders and always cause Barça huge problems, home or away, but the Catalans simply cannot throw away their shot in this one.
