A look at the weekend’s action

As we all know, Barcelona weren’t in action this weekend after their game against Osasuna was postponed following the tragic loss of first-team doctor Dr Carles Minarro Garcia on Saturday.

However, the remaining La Liga fixtures have been played and have thrown up some interesting results, not least at the Estadio Coliseum where Getafe dented Atletico’s title hopes by winning 2-1.

Atletico went ahead in the 75th minute when substitute Alexander Sorloth came off the bench to convert a penalty for a controversial handball that left the hosts absolutely fuming.

Ángel Correa was then sent off for a nasty challenge, and will now miss next weekend’s clash with Barcelona, before Getafe scored twice late on to secure a precious win.

Mauro Arambarri was the hero for the hosts, netting from close range in the 88th minute and again in added on time to hand Diego Simeone’s side just a third La Liga defeat of the season.

The result means that Los Colchoneros finish the weekend in third place in the table. They are just a point behind but have played one game more.

Real Madrid were next up with a visit from Rayo Vallecano. Los Blancos went ahead thanks to two goals in four minutes from Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, although Rayo did pull one back in first-half stoppage time through a lovely strike from Pedro Diaz.

A fairly disappointing second half followed with no more goals but some whistles from the Bernabeu crowd who weren’t too impressed with what they were seeing from Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Real Madrid hung on for the win to move level with Barcelona on 57 points at the top of the table, but Flick’s side stay top and have a game in hand on their title rivals.
