But Wojciech Szczęsny was signed instead

Former Real Madrid and PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas has claimed Barcelona were interested in bringing him in after losing Marc-Andre ter Stegen to a serious knee injury.

Barcelona ended up going for Wojciech Szczęsny instead, but Navas says his agent did receive a phone call from Catalunya.

“My name was mentioned in the media for Barça. But it’s always complicated... They called my agent, and football is always a challenge for us,” he told Cadena SER.

“In my case, I saw it as a great thing that the team that was a rival for so long, and I’ve always been white, sees it as an option. It’s very nice, and this interest is a compliment.”

Navas did go on to praise Szczesny who has forced his way past Inaki Pena and become No. 1 since coming out of retirement to play for Barca, saying: “He hasn’t lost his ability as a goalkeeper, it all depends on the team’s patience to give you the opportunity.”

Szczesny has already won the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona and will be hoping to lift the Copa del Rey on Saturday when the Catalans come up against Real Madrid.
