Barcelona appear to have beaten Bayern Munich to the signature of Anthony Gordon, with the Newcastle winger expected in the city today for a medical ahead of signing a five-year contract with the club.

Bayern Munich had been keen on Gordon and had also reportedly agreed personal terms with the England international over a transfer to Allianz Arena.

Like Barcelona, the Bavarians also submitted a bid on Wednesday but offered slightly less than Barcelona and were unwilling to match the Catalans, according to The Chronicle.

German media report Bayern needed to sell players to finance the deal and were considering offering cash plus goalkeeper Alexander Nubel to Newcastle. Barcelona, meanwhile, managed to agree a fee and will pay for the winger in instalments.

An update from Bild (h/t Sport) adds that Barcelona were also helped by Joan Laporta. Laporta spoke personally to Gordon and reportedly assured him he was wanted at Barca and could be registered before the World Cup.

German media view Bayern missing out on Gordon as a significant blow to the Bavarian giants, particularly after the club aimed a dig at the Catalans.

“FC Bayern is a buying club not a selling club, and Barcelona have no money anyway,” said Uli Hoeness recently after being asked about the chance of the Catalans signing Harry Kane.

Barca, meanwhile, have managed to get the deal done quickly and appear to have avoided the transfer turning into a long-running saga.
