Official: Barcelona to debut new kit in Champions League opener

We talked yesterday about the possibility of Barcelona debuting its new third kit in the UEFA Champions League opening group stage match against AS Roma, and we also talked about our fears that it would be a terrible kit. Everything is confirmed.

Barça and Nike announced on Tuesday that the Blaugrana will indeed wear their new electric blue kits, which Nike decided to call "Night Rising" for some reason, on Wednesday's away game.

Here's a few more details on the concept behind the creation of this uniform:

Barça proudly unveils its latest uniform design, which evolves the club’s famous blau, instantly identifiable in the traditional home colors, into an electric shade of the blue. The addition to its kit line-up is befitting of a club steeped in rich heritage yet renowned for forward-thinking and innovative football.

Fine detailing on the shirt honors the culture of the club. Inside the lightweight crafted collar is FC Barcelona’s renowned motto Més Que Un Club ("More Than A Club") – also imprinted in large letters on the seats at the Camp Nou. The Senyera, the Catalan flag, sits on the right sleeve and signals FC Barcelona’s pride in and deep connection to the region.

Names and numbers are in a unique typeface for FC Barcelona, informed by the sentinel chimneys ofAntoni Gaudí’s modernist masterpiece La Pedrera – an architectural icon synonymous with the city of Barcelona.

This kit represents visually powerful football apparel designed with style, the culture of the club and performance in mind.

Here's the thing: as of right now, it's a weird kit. At least the socks aren't black, as initially feared. That makes the pill a little easier to swallow, since the kit maintains a pattern. But last season's yellow third kit also looked weird but ended up being one of my favorite kits ever. That could be the case again with this one, especially if we debut the new equipment with a win.

What do you think, Blaugranes? Are the new kits fair or foul?
