A Fan’s Perspective: Selling Alcacer would be a big mistake
The striker is rumoured to be leaving
Paco Alcacer is rumoured to be leaving Barcelona in search of minutes on the pitch and the club looks ready to send him out the door for good.
Much has changed since Luis Enrique took over the club and the board brought in a host of promising young players in order to rebuild and reinvigorate the squad. The likes of Samuel Umtiti, Paco Alcacer, Lucas Digne, Denis Suarez, and Andre Gomes were brought in, all aged 22, in a bid to add some much-needed youth to an aging side. Of all the names in that list, only Umtiti managed to establish himself as a starter. “Project 22” as some call it, proved to be disappointing to say the least.
While the club has shipped Digne and Gomes out, Denis and Paco are yet to find their place on the squad. Both players have the necessary commitment to play for the Blaugrana and are able backups in their own right.
With Luis Suarez’s form more or less bad, there’s little hope that an aging Suarez will suddenly start being the killer in front of goal he was two years ago. The club needs a replacement and having Alcacer at its disposal is a luxury.
Selling him would require the club to invest heavily and while that in itself is not a problem, there are very few elite strikers available for picking this summer. Alcacer is a talented player and his numbers have never been disappointing even with limited playing time.
Perhaps, it is time that Barcelona benched Suarez and explored other options to make the transition post the Uruguayan, easier. It shouldn’t be good-bye for Alcacer just yet. He deserves one final chance to prove that he can be the finishing machine that Barcelona so desperately needs.
