Barcelona expected to reject Spanish Federation proposal to play el Clásico at Santiago Bernabéu

FC Barcelona is expected to reject the Spanish Federation’s proposal to play El Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Mundo Deportivo reports. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium on the 26th. However, the political situation in Catalonia has prompted questions regarding the security of the match.

The proposal originated from La Liga president Javier Tebas, who submitted it to the RFEF. The Spanish Federation then alerted the two clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid, about the idea.

Barcelona is expected to fully reject the proposal to play in Real Madrid’s home first, and then Camp Nou later. They want to stick by the original calendar, which has a match at Camp Nou soon and then a game at the Bernabéu later.

About two years ago, Barça asked for permission to postpone a match against Las Palmas when a referendum on independence was met with a heavy Spanish police response in Catalonia. The league rejected the proposal, telling Barcelona to either play the game or forfeit it. The culés decided to play the match but cancel entrances into the stadium, meaning the game was played almost without an audience, apart from club officials, players, coaches, and other staff with special permission.
