Spain Under-21 boss ‘pleasantly surprised’ by Riqui Puig

Spain Under-21 boss Luis de la Fuente has been talking about Riqui Puig and how impressed he’s been with the Barcelona midfielder.

Puig is in the squad and featured in Thursday’s 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands in qualifying for the U21 Euros. The team are back in action tomorrow against Kazakhstan.

De La Fuente offered his thoughts on the 21-year-old in his pre-match press conference.

“Riqui Puig is one of these players who surprises you with their football potential. Riqui, like the rest of the teammates, pleasantly surprised me with how good he is. The individual quality is extraordinary.”

Puig will be hoping he can also impress Ronald Koeman this season. The Dutch coach has already admitted he thinks the youngster would be better off going out on loan than staying at Barcelona.

The midfielder has responded by insisting he wants to stay and fight for his place and explained recently he believes Koeman will “give me opportunities to show my potential and demonstrate that I can play at such a big club.”
