The captain remains a target

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has been talking up a move for Barcelona captain Lionel Messi once again.

The Brazilian discussed the possibility of moving for Messi when his contract expires at the end of the season in a new interview with France Football.

“Great players like Messi will always be put in PSG’s list. Of course, it is not the time to talk about it or to dream about it. But we are sat at the big table of the clubs following this closely,” he said.

“Actually, no, we are not sat yet but our chair is reserved there, just in case. Four months [before the end of the season] in football, it is an eternity, especially at this time.”

PSG are also keen to tie Kylian Mbappe and Neymar down to new contracts which is likely to be an expensive business and may have an impact on the French club’s ability to afford to bring in Messi too.

Barcelona and PSG are set to meet in less than a month’s time in the Champions League. The Ligue 1 champions visit the Camp Nou on February 16 and will be under new management following Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment.
