Barcelona’s apeal over Koeman’s touchline ban fails
The coach remains banned for the visit of Atletico
Barcelona’s appeal to get Ronald Koeman’s two-match touchline ban overturned has failed with the Dutchman also set to miss out on Saturday’s clash against Atletico Madrid.
Koeman was shown a red card against Granada for saying “What a character” to the match official which really didn’t go down well.
The Barca boss was absent from the touchline for Sunday’s win over Valencia, with No. 2 Alfred Schreuder taking over, and now looks set to serve the second game of his ban.
Barca had appealed the decision but it’s been rejected and the club is reportedly now set to try their luck with the TAD (Spain’s Administrative Court for Sport).
Koeman complained about the ban ahead of the match against Valencia in his pre-game press conference.
“We’re going to appeal this decision because I think it’s an exaggerated suspension. All I said was ‘what a character’ and I got a two-match ban,” he said.
“If I’d insulted more heavily I think it would have been 20 games. We will appeal this decision to show we don’t agree with it. Tomorrow I won’t be on the bench but in the stadium but we’ve talked with the technical staff and we are prepared.”
Yet it seems likely that Koeman will be missing from the bench again versus Atletico in what is another crucial game for both sides in the race for the title. A win for Barcelona will move them above the Rojiblancos in the table with just three games left to play.
