Xavi on Gavi: “His passion is irreplaceable”
The coach blamed a “very demanding schedule” for the midfielder’s season-ending injury
Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández knew he would get a lot of questions about Gavi’s season-ending knee injury suffered while in Spain duty, and the boss did his best to avoid creating any controversy with the national team and instead focused on how much he and the team will miss the young midfielder.
Xavi praised Gavi’s personality and courage, and like many other coaches and players in recent weeks the boss blamed the demanding schedule at club and national team level for the injury.
“It’s a very important absence, an unfortunate accident. His passion is irreplaceable, he has so much will and courage. I have seen very few players, if any in my career, who have such a high emotional level and winning character.
“I have no problem [with Spain manager] Luis De La Fuente. This is not about the manager, it’s about the schedule and the number of games. Gavi has played a lot of games at his age, the schedule is full of matches and that’s why he got injured. And there’s also a bit of bad luck.”

There were reports earlier this week that Xavi and others at Barça were furious with the Spanish national team and manager Luis De La Fuente for his decision to not rest Gavi in a meaningless match, but Xavi is right to not create controversy with his public comments.
There’s no need to make this a bigger deal than it already is, and addressing the real problem of the calendar and the number of games players are subjected to may lead to some real, impactful change that helps avoid other cases like Gavi’s in the future.
