Who have been Barcelona’s best players in 2024/25 so far?

A number of candidates...

The Osasuna game aside, there isn’t a culer amongst us that won’t be delighted with the way the team are performing under Hansi Flick.

The German has gone about his business not necessarily under the radar, but without the fuss of the Xavi reign. There’s a calmness and seriousness about his way of working, and it’s easy to see how that’s already transmitted itself to the players.

There have already been already been some standout performances so far this season too. It may be early but let’s look at those who have really shone so far.

Raphinha

Paris Saint-Germain v FC Barcelona: Quarter-final First Leg - UEFA Champions League 2023/24

The best Barcelona player in 24/25 for me. The difference in the Brazilian compared to last season is nothing short of astonishing.

He’s working much harder than ever before, is setting a superb example to the younger players and, importantly, is making much better decisions this season.

Evidently Flick has tapped into something that was always there but which Xavi struggled to make manifest.

Robert Lewandowski

It’s all well and good having the expectation that your striker is going to score but for him to deliver on a consistent basis, it takes a bit more than pure hard work.

He’s being fed more which is clearly going to see him gobble up more chances than he did last season, however, Lewy is taking up much better positions this season and goals aplenty have resulted.

He no longer feels the need to come further back - almost into midfield, like Harry Kane does for England - to create a chance for himself, because his colleagues have now found their groove in terms of service into the centre-forward.

Inigo Martinez

Last season he was slow and cumbersome and fond of playing the ‘Hollywood’ ball at every opportunity.

This season Inigo has been dogged and determined in defence, and much more accurate with his passing accuracy.

He brings the ball out of defence with ease and has often been the instigator of Barca’s attacks.

Pau Cubarsi

It’s difficult to fathom that this kid is still only 17 years of age.

He plays like a veteran and rarely makes a bad decision.

As with many of the other youngsters in the side now, culers owe a debt of gratitude to Xavi for giving the players their bow, because Barça are reaping the rewards this season.

Has perfectly complemented Inigo Martinez to the extent that Ronald Araujo isn’t going to find it easy just to stride back into the starting XI.

Lamine Yamal

There are other candidates that could’ve made this list of five given just how well the side are playing, particularly Jules Kounde, but no ‘best of’ list at this stage would be complete without Lamine Yamal.

He has already become undroppable and unstoppable, which is both exciting on the one hand and deeply worrying on the other.

Flick won’t be swayed by anything other than what he sees with his own eyes, so culers can at least be assured that if he believes the youngster needs a rest, he will be sure to give him one.

In the meantime, we can just sit back and enjoy a genuine generational talent who gets better with each passing week.
