An interesting theory

Former Barcelona president Nico Gaspart has been analyzing why the Catalans failed to sign Nico Williams after seeing the Spain star renew his contract with Athletic Club.

Williams had appeared certain to sign for Barcelona, and his decision to stay in the Basque country has left the champion surprised and reportedly angry.

The player’s agent has already been criticised for his role in the transfer, and Gaspart says he would have handled him better.

“That intermediary Nico Williams has wouldn’t have deceived me. We would have seen it immediately,” he said in quotes reported by Marca.

”Now Bilbao has the problem. I hope they don’t say it’s our fault.

“Barcelona is a club of passion. And passion isn’t instilled by a professional, it’s instilled by someone who has it. The one who isn’t paid to be a Barça fan. And that’s not a criticism of Mr. Deco, far from it. But the one who signed Hansi Flick was Joan Laporta, not the manager.”

Gaspart also praised his own negotiating skills and pointed to the players he has signed for the club in the past.

“Don’t tell me stories! I’ve signed Maradona, Rivaldo, Zubizarreta, Bakero... I’ve never had anything like that happen to me. Once the manager tells you who the player is, it’s passion that convinces the player to come. It’s the face-to-face, the eye contact, the pursuit,” he added.

“There wasn’t any passion, and that’s not a criticism of Deco, who’s a professional who’s at Barcelona today and maybe tomorrow he’ll be at another team that pays him more. I wasn’t paid for what I did. I did it out of passion. And when you do it with passion, it’s very difficult for things to slip away.”

The former Barcelona chief also aimed a fairly brutal dig at Williams, adding: “I prefer to see Raphinha play, he’s much better than Nico.”
