Last five years see average of four goals a game in Athletic Club v FC Barcelona league games in Bilbao

You can’t take anything for granted in football, but if there is anything that does seem to be guaranteed, then it’s the promise of plenty of goals this Sunday at San Mamés. In the last five years, league matches between Athletic and Barça in Bilbao have produced an average of four goals a match.

The biggest goal-fest of the last half-decade came last season, when Barça romped home to the tune of a 5-2 win that put some important distance between themselves and second placed Real Madrid. Messi, Suárez, De Marcos (og), Neymar Jr and Pedro found the net in a crazy encounter.

Before then, Athletic and Barça had drawn two and won one each of the previous four meetings at San Mamés.

In the 2013/14 season, the first in the brand new stadium, the home side won the lowest scoring game in recent years between the sides. A year later, in Barça’s final game at ‘the Cathedral’, the game ended 2-2, just as it had done the previous season. Back in 2010/11, there were smiles on the Barça faces after the trip to Bilbao had ended in a 3-1 win for the Catalans.
