Ernesto Valverde says Barcelona ‘weren’t good’ against Real Valladolid

But he expects them to improve in the Champions League

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde admitted his team “weren’t good” during Saturday’s win over Real Valladolid.

The hosts won the game 1-0 thanks to a Lionel Mesi penalty but wasted several other good chances to score, including a second spot-kick that Jordi Masip saved.

Valverde talked about his side’s performance after the match but seemed confident they would be far better next time out against Lyon in the Champions League.

“The opposition also play but we weren’t good. It’s difficult to always shine and to create seven clear chances to win,” he said.

“With 3-0 or 4-0 we would be speaking in other terms, but we lacked speed in possession, that’s true.

“Now come the key games and we’re reliable there.”

Barcelona now head to Lyon who warmed up for the match with a 2-1 win over Ligue 1’s bottom side Guingamp on Friday night. The win means Lyon have lost just one of their last 13 matches.
