Barcelona to begin La Liga defence on a Friday night

The champions open up at San Mames

Barcelona have confirmed their first game of the new season will take place on Friday 16 August against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.

The match will be the first La Liga game of the new campaign, with the remaining fixtures taking place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 9pm local time, as Barcelona make a rare appearance on a Friday night.

Barcelona were held to a goalless draw away at Athletic last season back in February and drew 1-1 with the Basque side at the Camp Nou.
