De Jong explains which shirt number he wants at Barca

The midfielder has a strong preference

Frenkie de Jong has been talking about how he would like to wear the No. 21 at Barcelona next season.

The midfielder wore the same number at Ajax and is hoping he can keep hold of it after sealing his move to the Camp Nou.

De Jong says he could play with another number but explained why it holds special meaning for him.

“I feel comfortable with that number. I could easily play with another, you know, not that, but it is nice that it also gives people a certain recognizability,” he says.

“I brought my whole family to my presentation in Barcelona, except my grandfather Hans de Jong, my father’s father. He died and that was on my 21st birthday. Unconsciously it is also a kind of tribute. He was a huge football fan. I am sorry that he could not experience this and I am all the more happy that the rest of my family did attend.”

De Jong will have to hope Carles Alena is willing to swap numbers. The midfielder started the season wearing the No. 26 with Barcelona B but took the No. 21 shirt after being promoted to the first-team squad in December.
